Trout Bait
The trout fisherman has a lot of options available to him when fishing with trout bait. Trout bait can range anywhere from live bait such as nightcrawlers to homemade dough baits. These fishing baits can be grouped into three categories: human food, prepared trout dough bait, and live bait.

Human Food for Trout Bait
You can literally attach any type of food to a treble hook and hope to have a good chance of catching rainbow trout. Some of the best options are whole kernels of corn, marshmallows, cheese or pieces of cereal.

Trout Dough Baits
Scented, artificial baits are a great alternative to trout fishing with live bait. Many streams have regulations prohibiting the use of live bait so the proper selection of rainbow trout lures is crucial. Berkley makes some fantastic artificial bait for rainbow trout.

Berkley Gulp! trout dough comes in a variety of flavors like American pie and chunky cheese. Mold the dough bait around a treble hook and use a bobber with this bait. Berkley PowerBait trout nibbles come in several colors. There is a Berkley Gulp! corn flavored dough bait. Berkley Gulp! salmon eggs come several colors as well. There is even a Berkley PowerBait nugget that matches the scent and taste of the food that hatchery trout were raised on!

Berkley Gulp! waxies and Berkley Gulp! earthworms are great alternatives to the real thing and trout go crazy for them. Fish them just like you would a real wax worm or nightcrawler for great results. Berkley Power trout worms are smaller than Berkley Gulp! earthworms and great for triggering strikes on finicky trout. Berkley two inch power minnows are also great baits for rainbow trout or big brown trout.

Live Trout Bait
Like the other two kinds of trout bait, there are a lot of options for using live bait when fishing for rainbow trout. Insects like mayflies, grasshoppers, crickets, and larvae can be attached on small size 6 to 10 hooks and can be fly fished or bobber fished. Nightcrawlers are obviously a popular bait for trout fishing just like with most other species of fish. Minnows are an effective bait for rainbow trout and salmon eggs work great for trout fishing as well.
