Trout Spinners: Mepps Aglia

Trout Spinners: Mepps Aglia
The Mepps Aglia was recently ranked the #1 trout lure by readers of Field and Stream. Trout spinners are one of anglers’ favorite fishing lures and are effective all year round.

The size of your lure is important. A common rule of thumb to keep in mind is smaller fish bait will be effective for catching smaller fish and larger lures should be used when fishing for larger fish. A dressed spinner will have a larger profile in the water than regular spinners. This makes plain trout spinners work better for stream trout.

Mepps Aglias sizes range from #00 through #5. Size #00 weights 1/18 of an ounce and is a Mepps Ultra Lite. A #5 Aglia weighs half an ounce. The Mepps Aglia is so popular with fishermen world-wide because it will catch just about any freshwater fish and many species of saltwater fish. Mepps Aglia size #00 and #0 are good for smaller stream trout and size #4 Aglias are good for lunker Rainbow trout; a size #5 spinner would be used more as Northern Pike lures than for trout.

Unlike other trout fishing lures, Mepps spinners are not designed to imitate any of a trout’s normal diet. They tempt a trout into biting by appealing to its natural instincts. Spinners use flash and vibration to attract fish because of the revolving blade. This is why Mepps Aglia spinners will catch trout when no other lure will.

Rainbow trout and brook trout will hit a lures when they are traveling downstream with the current or additionally they will hit when they are coming upstream. Conversely, large brown trout will rarely, if ever, strike lures that are being retrieved upstream against the current. The bigger fish of all three species of trout are more likely to bite a trout spinner that is flowing downstream with the current. If you are fishing for trophy trout of any species it is important to keep this in mind.

Mepps Aglia inline spinners are one of the best lures for rainbow trout. The next time you are out fishing and want to use some top trout lures, try a Mepps Aglia.
